Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

๐Ÿ” Account & Access

1. How do I create a Moirai.world account? Click "Sign in" on the homepage, then "Join now". You can register using an academic or personal email, Google, or ORCID. Choose your account type (Student/Applicant or Researcher/Supervisor) during registration. You must be at least 18 years old to register. Moirai is designed for academic and professional use.

2. I forgot my password. How can I reset it? Click "Forgot password?" on the sign-in page. Enter your registered email and follow the instructions sent to your inbox.

3. Can I change my registered email address? Yes. Go to "Personal Information" โ†’ "Update my information" and update your email. A verification email will be sent to the new address.

4. Who can use Moirai.world? Moirai is designed for researchers, academics, postgraduate students, and institutions worldwide. Students may access all public research content. Application-related functions (supervisor matching, programme applications) are available to registered users. Institutions can access structural research data and, where applicable, institutional management tools.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Research Identity & Institutional Pages

5. What is a Research Identity page? A Research Identity page shows the real research structure of a university โ€” not rankings or marketing, but data-derived structural analysis. It reveals patterns that are typically invisible in traditional metrics, such as emerging areas, interdisciplinary bridges, and structural imbalances. Modules include the Research Atlas, Research Dynamics, Research Islands, Global Field Positioning, and the Evidence Panel. Coverage depends on the institution's Research Visibility Level: Resolved, Structured, Emerging, or Observed.

6. What is the Research Atlas? The Research Atlas is a structural map of how research is organised within an institution. It allows you to see not just what fields exist, but how research is distributed, concentrated, or fragmented across disciplines. Each cluster represents a group of related papers. Its position reflects disciplinary orientation, and its size reflects relative research volume. The Atlas uses a fixed coordinate system so you can compare the same institution across time.

7. What does "Structural Archetype" mean? Moirai classifies institutions into four structural archetypes based on their research distribution:

  • Broad & Balanced โ€” wide coverage across many fields with even distribution
  • Established & Diverse โ€” strong established areas plus breadth
  • Focused & Emerging โ€” concentrated in fewer areas, building depth
  • Specialist & Cohesive โ€” highly specialised, coherent research identity

These archetypes describe structure, not research quality or ranking.

8. What is Research Dynamics? Research Dynamics shows the momentum state of each research community within an institution. States include: Expanding Frontier, Sustained, Nascent, Consolidating, and Dormant. This reflects citation velocity and publication trends, not editorial judgement.

9. What is Global Field Positioning? This module compares an institution's research field distribution against the global baseline across all institutions in Moirai. It highlights fields where the institution is structurally over-represented (strengths) and fields that are globally significant but under-represented at the institution (strategic gaps).

10. Is Moirai.world a ranking system? No. Moirai does not rank institutions. It provides a structural view of research โ€” how activity is distributed, where strengths lie, and how research evolves over time. This allows users to understand research landscapes beyond rankings, rather than replacing them.

๐Ÿ” Research Findings

11. What are Research Findings? Research Findings are key conclusions and contributions extracted from academic papers by Moirai's AI pipeline. Unlike traditional academic search, Moirai surfaces what papers actually found โ€” not just what they are about. These are structured interpretations designed to make research contributions accessible and comparable at scale. Moirai currently holds 95M+ extracted findings.

12. How do I search Research Findings? Use the main search bar and enter a research question, topic, or keyword in plain language. Results show matching findings with their source paper, authors, institution, year, and citation count. You can filter by field, year range, and institution.

13. Why do some papers have no Findings? Not all papers have extractable findings. Papers without abstracts, very short papers, or papers in certain formats may not have findings extracted. We continuously expand coverage as data improves.

๐Ÿ“š Research Network

14. What does each node in the Research Network represent? Each node represents a published paper, preprint, or thesis. Connections between nodes represent citation relationships or semantic similarity. Node colour indicates the disciplinary field. This allows users to explore not only individual papers, but how ideas evolve and connect across the research landscape.

15. Can I contribute insights or evaluations on papers? Yes. Any registered user can add a Research Insight to any paper. When submitting, you indicate how your insight relates to the work:

  • Summary โ€” explaining what the paper contributes
  • Support โ€” evidence or experience that confirms the findings
  • Extension โ€” how the work applies in new contexts
  • Challenge โ€” questioning methodology, scope, or conclusions
  • Application โ€” real-world use of the research
You also indicate the nature of your contribution (personal perspective, experimental result, or replication attempt) โ€” this affects how insights are weighted and surfaced.
If you are a verified author of the paper (via ORCID), your contribution appears as an Author Statement with priority placement above other insights.
Insights are ranked by a combination of community votes and contribution quality, so the most substantive perspectives surface naturally over time. Insights with net negative votes are progressively folded or hidden.

16. What if a paper I need is not in the network? You can submit a request to add missing papers. We typically respond within 3 working days.

17. Why do some papers lack abstracts or citation counts? Moirai imports metadata from large-scale public databases including OpenAlex. Some entries may be incomplete due to gaps in the original data source. We regularly enrich records using Crossref, Unpaywall, and internal systems.

๐ŸŽ“ Applications & Supervision

18. How can I apply for a research programme? Navigate to the "Admissions" section. Choose your target institution or supervisor, complete your profile, and submit required documents including your CV, Research Proposal, and Degree Certificates.

19. Can I track my application status? Yes. Go to "My Applications" to view your history, current status (Submitted, Under Review, Accepted), and messages from institutions.

20. Can I apply to multiple supervisors or institutions? Yes. Each application is treated independently.

21. Is there a fee to apply? Moirai does not charge applicants. Some institutions may have their own application fees, which will be listed during submission.

๐Ÿ”— ORCID Integration

22. Does Moirai support ORCID integration? Yes. You can connect your ORCID from your Profile page. Once connected, your ORCID publications, affiliations, and employment history are imported and displayed on your profile. ORCID is an optional academic enhancement โ€” it is not required for registration. Your email remains your account anchor, and ORCID is linked separately.

23. What happens if my ORCID data conflicts with information I entered manually? Your personal data remains under your control. ORCID integration enhances your profile but does not override your own inputs.
